A city of different walls
Leeds housing changes considerably from one neighbourhood to the next. Headingley and the streets around Burley include older terraces, while the city also has inter-war semis, detached homes and newer extensions. A familiar-looking frontage does not tell you everything about the construction beneath its paint or render.
Back-to-back homes and terraces can have limited exposed wall area but complicated access. A semi may have a large gable and several generations of extension work. John looks at the particular wall rather than recommending the same treatment for a whole street. Existing finishes and alterations are part of that assessment.
Choosing between inside and outside
If a brick frontage is an important part of the house, an internal cork application may be worth discussing. It still needs a suitable background and careful thought around sockets, skirting and adjoining surfaces. External cork rendering offers another route where the outside can appropriately receive a new coating.
Cork spray has insulating properties, but a coating is not equivalent to a full insulation-board system. For a project focused on energy performance, discuss your aim first so the proposed specification can be assessed against it. For a decorative refresh, conventional plastering or a different render may be the more direct option.
Moisture and preparation in an older Leeds home
On solid walls, the compatibility of existing materials matters. A new breathable layer cannot undo impermeable paint beneath it. Leaking gutters, defective roof junctions and damaged masonry need attention before a coating is considered. If you notice a damp patch, tell John when it appears and what repairs have already been attempted.
Preparation may involve removing loose material, repairing the background and agreeing suitable priming. Windows, vents and the base of the wall need correct detailing. Those less visible tasks influence the finished job as much as the colour or texture, particularly where old and new construction meet.
Working around everyday life
In Headingley, Horsforth and Pudsey, as elsewhere in Leeds, access can shape the programme. Mention narrow side passages, shared routes, parking restrictions and rooms you need to keep in use. If work reaches a boundary or adjoining property, arrangements need to be agreed before access equipment is planned.
John is on every job and remains your point of contact. He discusses the work, assesses the surfaces and sets out the proposed scope. Exterior application depends on suitable conditions, so timing is confirmed around the job rather than promised before the walls have been seen.
Tell John about your Leeds project
We cover Leeds and the surrounding areas, including Headingley, Horsforth, Pudsey, Wetherby and Otley. You can compare our six services or browse the projects gallery for examples of finishes. The gallery describes what the photographs show without assigning an unverified Leeds location to a job.
For a free, no-obligation quote, share your postcode, property type and the wall or room involved. Say whether you want to discuss warmth, appearance, damaged render or a renovation. You do not need to know the name of a system. John can help you work through the options from the condition of the building.
